Scope and medical note

Hydrogen water is ordinary drinking water containing dissolved molecular hydrogen gas (H₂). It is not hydrogen peroxide, and it does not have to be alkaline. Researchers have tested hydrogen-rich water in human trials, but the evidence does not establish a consumer product as a way to prevent or treat disease. This guide is general information, not medical advice.

“There is research” and “this machine will produce a clinical benefit” are different claims. A responsible comparison starts with what can be measured in the water, then keeps product compliance, practical ownership and uncertain health outcomes separate.

How Is Hydrogen Water Made?

Commercial products generally use one of three approaches:

  • Electrolysis: electrodes generate hydrogen from water, often with a membrane separating gas streams.
  • Gas infusion: hydrogen gas is dissolved into water under controlled conditions.
  • Magnesium tablets or sticks: a chemical reaction releases hydrogen into water, normally in a sealed container.

The resulting water should be described by its dissolved molecular-hydrogen concentration, commonly in milligrams per litre (mg/L) or parts per million (ppm). In a dilute water solution, 1 mg/L is approximately 1 ppm.

Hydrogen is a small, volatile molecule. The measured concentration can fall after generation depending on the container, seal, headspace, temperature, agitation and elapsed time. A number measured inside a machine is therefore not automatically the concentration that reaches the glass or remains when it is consumed.

The useful measurement

Ask for a direct dissolved-H₂ result at the point and time of drinking, with the source water, temperature, method and elapsed time stated. Gas production, bubble appearance and an ORP reading are not substitutes for that result.

Hydrogen Water Is Not the Same as Alkaline Water

Alkaline water is defined by a higher pH. Hydrogen-rich water is defined by dissolved H₂. Some electrolysis processes can affect both, which is why the terms are often mixed together, but they remain separate measurements.

MeasurementWhat it describesWhat it does not establish
Dissolved H₂ (mg/L or ppm)Molecular hydrogen remaining in the sampled water under the stated test conditionsA clinical benefit, universal dose or concentration at a later time
pHHow acidic or alkaline the water isHow much dissolved H₂ the water contains
ORP (mV)Electrochemical potential under the sample and meter conditionsA reliable dissolved-H₂ concentration or health effect
Gas volume or visible bubblesGas production or gas present in and around the waterThe amount actually dissolved at the point of drinking

A 2022 analysis modelled how pH, temperature and hydrogen affect oxidation-reduction potential. It concluded that ORP and ORP-based meters should not be used to estimate or compare dissolved-H₂ levels: a pH change can influence ORP far more than a practical change in hydrogen concentration.

Our alkaline-versus-hydrogen guide compares the two categories in more detail.

What Does Human Research Show?

The responsible summary is: early signals, small and varied studies, and no established general-health outcome.

A 2024 systematic review included 25 human studies across exercise capacity, metabolism, cardiovascular measures, mental health and other topics. Its authors described preliminary findings while calling for larger samples and more rigorous methods. The populations, dose, duration, endpoints and delivery methods varied, which makes a broad consumer-health conclusion difficult.

Scroll table horizontally →

EvidenceWhat was reportedWhy the claim stays limited
2024 systematic reviewTwenty-five human studies with preliminary signals across several health areasSmall, heterogeneous studies; larger and more rigorous trials needed
12-man crossover exercise trialChanges in lactate, ventilation and perceived exertion during a cycling protocolSmall male sample and protocol-specific intermediate outcomes
14-runner crossover exercise trialNo difference in treadmill performance or measured physiological responsesSmall trained-male sample and acute dosing protocol
2024 lipid meta-analysisEight trials and 357 patients showed modest changes in some lipid measuresMetabolic-disorder populations, heterogeneity and need for longer, larger trials
2026 lipid meta-analysisThirteen trials and 757 participants showed small changes in total and LDL cholesterolEffects were below meaningful cardiovascular-risk thresholds and do not support routine lipid-lowering use

These studies can generate hypotheses. They do not establish that hydrogen water improves health in a typical healthy buyer, and a result from one study formulation cannot automatically be transferred to every generator. Even statistically detectable biomarker changes may not be large enough to change a meaningful clinical outcome.

Does the FDA Consider Hydrogen Water “Approved”?

No treatment or device approval should be inferred from a food-ingredient notice.

The US Food and Drug Administration database records a 2014 Generally Recognized as Safe notice—GRN 520—for hydrogen gas used as an ingredient in drinking water, flavoured beverages and soda drinks, at the stated intended-use level. The FDA responded that it had “no questions” about the notifier’s GRAS conclusion for that ingredient use.

That response is not approval of a hydrogen-water generator, a recommended dose, or a claim to prevent or treat illness. It also does not verify the output or safety documentation of a specific appliance.

Safety and Medical Claims in Malaysia

Published drinking-water trials have generally described short-term use under their study conditions. That evidence is not a substitute for exact-model electrical, food-contact, hygiene and servicing documentation, and it does not establish unlimited or long-term use for every population.

Malaysia’s Medical Device Authority states that medical-device advertising sits under the Medical Device Act 2012, Medical Device Regulations 2012 and Medical Device (Advertising) Regulations 2019. Whether a particular product falls within that framework depends on its intended purpose and regulatory status. This guide does not claim that Hhuhu is registered as a medical device.

The practical boundary is simpler: disease-treatment claims are not justified by the human evidence summarised here. Do not change prescribed care based on a product page, demonstration or testimonial. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, take medication or plan to use hydrogen water alongside treatment, discuss it with a qualified clinician.

How to Compare Hydrogen-Water Products

1. Ask what concentration is actually measured

Look for dissolved H₂ in mg/L or ppm, measured with a suitable direct method at a stated point, time and temperature. “Combined dissolved plus bubble form,” total generated gas, gas volume and negative ORP are different quantities and should not be compared as if they were dissolved concentration.

2. Ask for the full test report

A useful report identifies the exact model and sample, laboratory and test date, source-water conditions, temperature, measurement method and calibration. It should show concentration immediately after generation and after a realistic standing period, preferably over multiple runs rather than only a selected best result.

3. Separate compliance from efficacy

Electrical-safety, electromagnetic-compatibility, restricted-substance, quality-management and food-contact documents address different product or manufacturing questions. None by itself proves a health benefit. Check the exact model, issuing body, scope, result and validity date rather than relying on a row of logos.

4. Check the practical ownership details

Compare the required source water, batch or tank size, cycle and dispense time, cleaning, consumables, footprint, power, warranty, local servicing and replacement parts. A generator that is hard to clean or awkward to refill may not fit the household even if a peak laboratory result looks impressive.

5. Treat testimonials as anecdotes

A person’s reported energy, sleep, pain or recovery can change for many reasons. A testimonial cannot establish cause, estimate the size of an effect or replace controlled evidence.

What the Current Hhuhu Malaysia Manual Documents

Hhuhu is a point-of-use hydrogen-water generator, not a tap-water purifier. Its current Malaysia manual requires compatible purified, distilled or reverse-osmosis source water and describes a visible milky appearance caused by micro- and nano-sized bubbles. The appearance fades as bubbles leave the water; it is not a dissolved-H₂ measurement.

Dissolved-H₂ evidenceThe current manual does not state a dissolved-H₂ concentration or identify an exact-model laboratory reportAsk Velta Malaysia for the current full measurement report before comparing output claims

Use only the water and cleaning routine specified in the manual. The stricter user guidance states purified or RO water at TDS ≤5; the specification section states distilled or RO water at TDS <10. When two limits appear in one document, following the stricter operating instruction and confirming source-water suitability with Velta Malaysia is the cautious approach.

Questions to Ask During a Demonstration

  1. 01
What is the dissolved-H₂ concentration at the point of drinking?

Ask for mg/L or ppm, plus the sample time and temperature.

  2. 02
Can I see the complete report for this exact model?

Check the model, laboratory, method, date, source water and multiple test runs.

  3. 03
Is the number dissolved concentration, total gas or a combined figure?

Do not compare unlike quantities on one ppm scale.

  4. 04
    How quickly does concentration decline?

Ask for results in the supplied glass or container over the time you would actually drink it.

  5. 05
    What source water is required?

Check the purifier, water temperature and TDS conditions used for the test and required at home.

  6. 06
How are all water-contact parts cleaned?

Remove, inspect and reseat the tank during the demonstration if possible.

  7. 07
What does the Malaysia warranty cover?

Confirm labour, transport, exclusions, response route and replacement-part availability.

  8. 08
Which statements are specifications and which remain hypotheses?

A measured output and a proposed health outcome need different evidence.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hydrogen water taste different?

Molecular hydrogen is colourless and odourless. Taste can still differ because of the source water, minerals, temperature, device materials or cleaning condition. The Hhuhu manual describes a milky visual effect from small bubbles, not a flavour additive.

How much hydrogen water should I drink?

There is no generally accepted clinical dose for healthy consumers. Research protocols vary in concentration, volume, timing and population, so a study intake should not be turned into a universal recommendation. Follow the product instructions and seek clinical advice for a medical question.

How long does dissolved hydrogen last?

There is no single duration. Initial concentration, container material, seal, headspace, temperature, agitation and elapsed time all matter. Results measured in the supplied container over a realistic drinking period are more useful than an unstated peak value.

Is a higher ppm always better?

No. First confirm that the value is a valid direct measurement of dissolved H₂ under stated conditions. Human research has not established that the highest consumer-device reading produces the best general-health outcome.

Can hydrogen water treat inflammation, diabetes or another condition?

It is not an established treatment for these conditions. Research on biomarkers or defined patient groups does not justify replacing medical care or applying the finding to every person and generator. Do not stop or change treatment based on a product claim.

Does Hhuhu purify tap water?

No. Hhuhu does not contain a tap-water purification stage or replacement filter. Its current Malaysia manual requires compatible purified, distilled or RO source water. It also does not heat, chill or carbonate the water.
