Microplastics in Drinking Water: What Do We Know?

Why small plastic particles are found in tap and bottled water, what current evidence can and cannot establish, and how treatment affects them.

Finding a particle and proving a health effect are different steps. WHO’s drinking-water assessment found important evidence gaps and, based on the limited information available, did not identify a reliable basis for alarm about microplastics in drinking water. Research, especially on very small particles, continues.

Microplastics are plastic pieces or fibres smaller than five millimetres. That category spans particles visible to the eye down to particles requiring specialised instruments. Nanoplastics are smaller again, and definitions and measurement methods are still developing.

Where Do They Come From?

Sources can include degraded packaging and litter, synthetic textiles, tyres and road wear, industrial materials, atmospheric deposition, wastewater and surface run-off. Particles can enter source water and can also be introduced through packaging or handling, which is why bottled water is not automatically microplastic-free.

Why Are Study Numbers So Different?

Studies use different sample volumes, filters, size cut-offs, contamination controls and identification methods. A study that can see smaller particles will usually count more. Results should not be compared until the methods and units are aligned.

What Does WHO Say About Health Risk?

WHO’s 2019 drinking-water review concluded that chemicals and biofilms associated with microplastics were a low concern based on available evidence. It found insufficient information for firm conclusions about the physical hazard, particularly for the smallest particles, while noting no reliable information then suggested a drinking-water health concern.

That is not the same as proving zero risk. WHO called for better research and recommended that water suppliers continue prioritising established microbial and chemical hazards while optimising particle removal.

Can Water Treatment Reduce Microplastics?

Well-operated coagulation, sedimentation and filtration can remove particles at treatment plants. At home, a purifier’s ability depends on pore size, membrane integrity, the rest of the treatment train and the particle size being measured.

  • Carbon blocks and fine filters can capture particles larger than their effective retention range.
  • Ultrafiltration uses a membrane designed for fine particles and microorganisms under stated conditions.
  • RO uses a tighter membrane and can provide a strong particle barrier, but exact-system integrity and maintenance remain essential.

No purifier should promise “zero microplastics” without a defined size range, method, challenge water and exact-model report.

Is bottled water free from microplastics?

No such assumption is justified. Studies have detected particles in both tap and bottled water, and packaging or handling can contribute.

Does boiling remove microplastics?

Boiling is for microbial control; it is not a validated general microplastics-removal method.

Should microplastics be my first water concern?

Not necessarily. Follow local advisories and address known microbial, chemical, storage-tank or plumbing problems first. Emerging concerns should not distract from established risks.
