Think of the response as a controlled fire around a fortress. In the short term, that fire is useful: redness, warmth, swelling and immune activity help contain damage. This is acute inflammation—a rapid response designed to resolve as healing progresses.
Chronic inflammation is different. It is more like a fire that continues to smoulder after the immediate danger has passed. Persistent immune signalling can gradually affect healthy tissue, which is why chronic inflammation is studied across many long-term health conditions.
What does “-itis” mean?
The suffix -itis means inflammation of a body part or tissue. Arthritis refers to joint inflammation; tendinitis to a tendon; bronchitis to the bronchial tubes; hepatitis to the liver. The name tells us where inflammation is occurring, not automatically why it began or how it should be treated.
Why the lesson turns to molecular hydrogen
