Vitamin C is essential. It helps make collagen, supports normal immune function and works as an antioxidant in water-based environments such as blood and the fluid around cells. But the body uses an antioxidant network, not one universal molecule.
What vitamin C does well
Vitamin C can donate electrons to stabilise reactive molecules and can help regenerate other antioxidants. Because humans cannot make it, regular dietary sources—fruit, vegetables and other whole foods—are important.
Why one antioxidant cannot cover everything
Water-soluble vitamin C and fat-soluble vitamin E operate in different environments. Enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione-related systems perform other jobs inside cells. The useful question is therefore not “Which single antioxidant is best?” but “How do the systems complement one another?”
