Is Carbonated Water Good for You? What the Research Actually Says

Plain sparkling water hydrates, but bubbles, flavours and sweeteners raise different questions. Here is what human studies, dental research and clinical guidance do—and do not—establish.

This guide discusses plain, unsweetened carbonated water. Tonic water, cola, sweetened drinks and acidic flavoured products are not nutritionally interchangeable. This is general evidence, not diagnosis or treatment advice; people with swallowing disorders, kidney disease, reflux or a prescribed diet should follow their clinician’s guidance.

What Is Carbonated Water?

Carbonated water is water with carbon dioxide dissolved under pressure. When pressure falls after opening a bottle or dispensing a glass, some of the gas leaves the water as bubbles.

Sparkling water and seltzer usually refer to this simple format. Club soda commonly adds mineral salts. Tonic water adds quinine plus sugar or sweetener. Sparkling mineral water starts with source water containing naturally occurring minerals and may be naturally carbonated or have CO₂ added.

Does Carbonated Water Hydrate You?

Yes, plain carbonated water contributes to fluid intake. In a 2016 randomised trial, researchers gave healthy participants one litre of 13 different drinks and tracked urine output and fluid balance. Cumulative four-hour urine output after sparkling water did not differ from still water.

That result supports a practical conclusion, not a universal clinical guarantee: in ordinary healthy participants under the study conditions, carbonation did not make water fail as hydration.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention includes sparkling water and seltzer among low- or no-calorie choices. If the fizz helps someone choose unsweetened water instead of a sugary drink, the substitution can lower sugar and calorie intake. It does not give plain sparkling water a special hydration power beyond being water.

Does It Damage Your Teeth?

Dissolved CO₂ forms weak carbonic acid, so sparkling water is more acidic than neutral still water. But pH alone does not capture the whole erosive effect: other acids, mineral composition, titratable acidity, exposure pattern and saliva all matter.

A 2001 laboratory study compared mineral waters with soft drinks. Sparkling mineral waters caused slightly more enamel dissolution than still waters, but the levels were low relative to the tested soft drinks. Degassing reduced dissolution, while mineral composition also affected the result.

The American Dental Association’s consumer guidance says plain sparkling water is generally fine for teeth. Its important cautions are to check for sugar and added acids, especially citrus flavouring, and to avoid treating every product called “sparkling water” as plain water.

Practical dental distinction

Plain water + CO₂ is the lower-concern format. Sugar, citric acid, juice or acidic flavouring changes the dental question. Frequent sipping extends exposure, so a dentist should advise anyone with existing erosion, sensitivity or high cavity risk.

Does It Affect Bone Health?

The broad claim that “carbonation weakens bones” is not supported by the best-known observational comparison.

The Framingham Osteoporosis Study analysed carbonated-beverage intake and bone mineral density in more than 2,500 adults. Cola intake was associated with lower bone mineral density at some hip sites in women; non-cola carbonated drinks were not.

That study was observational. It cannot prove that cola caused the difference or identify carbonation as the mechanism. It does help show why evidence about cola—containing ingredients and consumption patterns absent from plain sparkling water—should not be automatically applied to water plus CO₂.

Bone health depends on far more consequential factors including age, hormones, activity, overall diet, calcium and vitamin D status, medical conditions and medicines. Sparkling water should not displace nutritionally important drinks where a clinician or dietitian has recommended them.

Does It Cause Bloating or Digestive Issues?

Carbonation can produce belching, temporary fullness or bloating as gas leaves the drink. Whether that is pleasant, neutral or uncomfortable varies by person.

People with reflux, dyspepsia or irritable-bowel symptoms can have individual triggers. The US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases advises people with GERD to notice foods and drinks that worsen their own symptoms. If sparkling water reliably triggers discomfort, still water is the straightforward alternative.

A small 2002 randomised trial assigned 21 people with functional dyspepsia and secondary constipation to carbonated or tap water for 15 days. Symptom scores improved in the carbonated-water group. The sample was tiny, the period short and blinding a visibly fizzy drink is difficult, so the finding is a research signal—not a reason to treat constipation or indigestion without appropriate care.

Are There Actual Benefits?

The well-supported everyday benefits are simple: plain sparkling water provides fluid without sugar or calories, and some people prefer its sensory experience. It can therefore be a useful replacement for a sweetened carbonated drink.

Research also suggests carbonation changes swallowing sensation and timing. Small studies have measured different swallow responses in healthy adults and people with dysphagia. A 2022 systematic review concluded that whether carbonation prevents penetration or aspiration or meaningfully improves adult swallowing remains unclear, with low-quality evidence for several outcomes.

That distinction matters. Interesting physiological effects do not make sparkling water a home treatment for swallowing difficulty. Dysphagia can lead to aspiration, dehydration and malnutrition and should be assessed by the appropriate clinician or speech-language professional.

The small digestive trial described above is similarly preliminary. The evidence does not justify presenting carbonated water as a treatment, weight-loss aid, bone supplement or therapeutic drink.

What About Flavoured Sparkling Water?

Read the ingredient list and nutrition panel. The word “water” on the front does not tell you whether the product contains sugar, sweetener, fruit juice, citric acid, phosphoric acid, sodium or other additions.

A laboratory study of flavoured sparkling waters sold in the UK measured low pH and appreciable acidity in the tested products, with in-vitro enamel effects. Those results cannot assign one risk to every modern product, but they establish that acid-flavoured sparkling water can behave differently from plain sparkling water.

Home carbonation gives direct control over the starting water and anything added after dispensing. A bottle carbonator is the simpler route when only fizz is needed. A combined appliance is relevant when filtration and temperature-controlled dispensing are also genuine requirements.

Can children drink sparkling water?

Plain, unsweetened sparkling water can be another beverage choice when appropriate for the child, but it should not displace age-appropriate nutrition or a clinician’s feeding plan. Avoid assuming flavoured or sweetened products are equivalent, and ask a paediatric professional about infants, swallowing difficulty, reflux or other concerns.

Is plain sparkling water bad for healthy kidneys?

No established evidence identifies carbonation alone as harmful to healthy kidneys. Mineral and sodium content varies, however. Anyone with kidney disease, fluid restriction or a prescribed mineral limit should use the exact label and clinical advice.

How much sparkling water is too much?

There is no useful universal glass limit for plain sparkling water. Your total fluid needs, symptoms, sodium or mineral restrictions and dental context matter. Reduce it if bloating, belching or reflux becomes uncomfortable and seek advice for persistent symptoms.

Does carbonated water cause weight gain?

Plain water plus CO₂ has no sugar or calories. Its effect on a person’s diet depends mainly on what it replaces and what is added. Replacing a sugary drink with plain sparkling water reduces beverage sugar and calories; tonic, syrup and sweetened sparkling drinks are different.

Is sparkling water bad for acid reflux?

It can be a symptom trigger for some people and not others. If it repeatedly worsens heartburn, regurgitation or bloating, choose still water and discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician rather than relying on a general internet rule.

Is sparkling water better than still water?

Not universally. Both contribute to fluid intake. Sparkling water offers a preferred taste and possible substitution for sweet drinks; still water avoids carbonation-related fullness and is the simpler choice for people whose symptoms are triggered by fizz.
