Does RO Water Remove Important Minerals?

Yes—and that is not a good reason to settle for a weaker purification barrier. Food is the main and more dependable source of essential minerals; RO is chosen for cleaner, more consistently treated drinking water.

The clear answer

Removing minerals is not a good reason to reject RO. Water is for hydration; a balanced diet is the more reliable source of calcium, magnesium and other essential minerals. Velta prioritises the broader purification barrier instead of compromising it to retain minerals from the source water.

A reverse-osmosis membrane reduces dissolved minerals because it is designed to separate dissolved substances from drinking water. That same tighter barrier is the reason RO can address more than sediment, taste and odour. The small and inconsistent mineral contribution from water is not worth weakening that barrier.

Your Minerals Should Come From Food

WHO’s review of drinking-water hardness says food typically contributes more than 80% of calcium and magnesium intake, while water commonly contributes about 5–20%. The exact amount in water changes by source, location and season; food is far easier to choose and manage consistently.

This is the practical point: a purifier should not be expected to complete your diet. It should provide a strong barrier between the household and unwanted substances in its drinking water.

The figures change with the water source and food chosen, but the lesson remains: minerals are obtained more reliably through diet than by accepting a looser purification barrier.

Is Mineral-Free Water “Dead Water”?

No. “Dead water” is a marketing phrase, not a scientific water category. Water’s core role is hydration. Mineral content can affect taste, scaling and dietary contribution, but a TDS number does not measure vitality, safety or nutritional completeness.

A Filter Cannot Select “Good” by Marketing Language

Systems that retain dissolved minerals also allow other dissolved substances to remain unless another treatment stage is proven to reduce them. This does not mean every mineral-retaining filter is useless; carbon and ultrafiltration each have valuable roles. It means they do not provide the same broad dissolved-substance barrier as RO.

Will RO water cause a mineral deficiency?

RO lowers minerals from water, but deficiency depends on total diet and individual health, not the purifier alone. Food normally supplies most calcium and magnesium.

Do I need an alkaline or mineral cartridge?

Not automatically. It may suit your taste or application. Check what it adds, the output evidence and replacement plan rather than relying on the word “alkaline”.

Is low TDS the same as pure and safe?

No. TDS is one broad measurement. It does not identify individual contaminants or prove microbial safety. Exact treatment claims and maintenance matter.
